A feast in honor of the Don icon of the Mother of God

Today, in the monastery called Donsky and located near the reigning city of Moscow, the Feast of the Most Holy Virgin Mary is celebrated in honor of the venerated miraculous icon of the Virgin.

It was brought by the Don army to the great prince as a gift and to help against enemies. By the prayers of the Most Holy Mother of God, with Her gracious power, proceeding from the miraculous icon, the Tatars were defeated. Solemnly celebrating with his army his victory, the great prince returned to his throne city of Moscow and brought with him an honorable icon, named Don's icon on the occasion of the former Don victory over the Tatars.

During the reign of the good-hearted king and great prince Feodor Ioannovich, the Crimean horde made a sudden raid on the possessions of the Moscow state, and the Tatar khan Murat Girey approached the very capital city of Moscow.

He took the icon of the Holy Mother of God from the Don to his camp, where he defeated the Tatar troops and drove them away with the help of the Mother of God.

On this day, from the great cathedral church of the city of Moscow, the entire holy class comes to the monastery with honest crosses and icons and celebrates a solemn feast in honor of the Mother of God.
